Occupational Therapy & Hand Therapy

Jennifer Krol Ekizian, OTR/L, has been working in the field of Occupational Therapy since 1996.  She graduated from Dominican College with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Occupational Therapy and in addition has attained a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.  Jennifer has participated in a multitude of continuing education courses and is certified in the NeuroDevelopmental Treatment (NDT) Technique.  Jennifer is also an active member of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Prior to joining Rockland Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Jennifer worked at The Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, New York as well as several of its hospital network affiliations.  During this time, Jennifer’s responsibilities included Senior Therapist, Research Therapist and Supervisor of OT.  Jennifer was also a member of the Burke Consortium Multi-Center Robotic Training Study wherein she developed protocols, performed assessments and implemented hands-on treatment in regaining upper extremity function after stroke.  Jennifer has co-authored several articles that have been published in various medical journals including Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, “Assessing the Motor Status Score: A scale for the evaluation in motor limb outcomes in patients after stroke.”; Current Atherosclerosis Reports,  “Robotics and Other Devices in the Treatment of Patients Recovering from Stroke.”; Autonomous Robots, “Rehabilitation Robotics: Performance-Based Progressive Robot Assisted Therapy.”; and, Clinical Rehabilitation ,“Continuous passive motion improves shoulder joint integrity following stroke.”  Jennifer also implemented the Constraint Induced Therapy Program at Burke, assisting patients in regaining hand function after stroke.

Most recently, Jennifer has shifted her clinical practice solely to the outpatient treatment of upper extremity and hand disorders.  She also presently is an adjunct professor in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Rockland Community College.  Jennifer teaches two second-year courses, OT Treatment Applications for patients with Physical Dysfunction and Advanced Therapeutic Occupations.

Jennifer enjoys treating patients with many different upper extremity diagnoses and utilizes current, innovative treatment strategies and state of the art equipment to maximize client outcome.


Sara Burman-Newby, OTR/L, graduated from the The University of Kansas with a bachelor's of science degree in Occupational Therapy in 1986. She has been specializing in Hand Therapy since 1990. She received the designation Certified Hand Therapist in 1992.

Previously, Sara was the Senior Hand Therapist and Clinical Supervisor of the Cornell Hand Rehabilitation Center located in The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. During her tenure at Cornell, Sara developed many innovative treatment protocols, quality assurance programs and exercise regimes for the hand and upper extremity patients.

She has contributed to the professional growth and development of her fellow colleagues, Occupational and Physical Therapy students, and Certified Hand Therapy candidates through numerous presentations of educational in-services, splinting workshops and courses in the area of hand and upper extremity rehabilitation. She has also taught Hand Evaluation and Therapeutic Techniques to physical therapy students through Cornell's affiliation with S.U.N.Y. Sara actively participated in clinical research at Cornell to improve the efficacy and quality of treatment techniques for hand injured patients.

Sara has been involved with community service through publications in community newsletters and educational in-services on such diverse topics as arthritis and cumulative trauma. She has been an active member of the American Society of Hand Therapists Association. In 1997, she won the scientific poster award for her clinical abstract: "Postoperative Management of the Elbow Compass Hinge." She has a special interest in treating multiple trauma and reconstruction to the hand and upper extremity. Sara has maintained a close working relationship with many renowned hand surgeons and therapists. She looks forward to continually providing patients with high quality personalized care.
